Student Development Programs

  1. Popcorn With a Purpose – The Lancaster County MH/MR comes in to run a program in which a certain aspect o issue of special education is discussed through the viewing of Hollywood Movies. In Fall2005, they discussed mental retardation through the movie “Radio”. After showing only clips (not the full movie) they hold discussions, group activities, and other enriching activities. This year they are coming Tuesday Nov. 14th 7-9 pm to discuss mental illness using “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “A Beautiful Mind”.
  2. Assistive Technology – The I.U.13 comes in and discusses how assistive technology is utilized in the classroom. We have a course on the different kinds of assistive technology out there and available to us, but this is a very hands on learning experience outlining strategies we could use to properly utilize these forms of technology in the classroom. This program was requested in Spring 2004 and has stuck with our series ever since. This year they will be coming on November 16th from 7:30-8:30pm.
  3. Early Intervention- This is a new program to CEC. This year someone came up to me and asked who to turn to in order to get more information about Early Intervention programs and what they do for us as teachers. The I.U.13 will be facilitating this program and I am very excited to see how this will turn out!
  4. Sign Language - Millersville University does not offer any course in sign language. So we decided to bring in a specialist to go over the basics, the foundations, and some of the history of sign language. She comes in the fall to go over most of the foundations, and returns in the spring for more of an instruction period to teach us simple phrases and the alphabet.
  5. Guide Dog Training- One of our professors here at Millersville University trains Seeing Eye dogs and other service dogs. She comes in to discuss how the process works; some of the things the dogs can provide assistance for, and what to expect if we encounter this as educators.
  6. Educational Paths at Millersville – With a number of dual major students trying to fit 5 years of course work into 4 years; we found this program especially helpful for our underclassmen. We have a panel of professors, seniors, student teachers, and juniors discuss which classes to take, what to expect from those classes, what they wish they knew, and how to graduate in 4 years as a dual major.

There are probably more programs that we have done in the past and there will be more to come in the future. We take all suggestions from our members on how to better their educational experience and how to further their development as educators. We open our programs up to those members of SPSEA and any other member of our student body.

Activities

  1. University Sponsored Events- We receive emails as an organization from the university to take part in volunteer opportunities to better our community both on campus and off.
  2. Community Outreach – We take a group of students to some of the group homes in the area and play games. We take the individuals out as well into the community and do various activities.
  3. Saturday Recreation – We provide fun activities for children with exceptionalities. Activities will include but not be limited to bowling, museums, pizza parties, arts and crafts, open gym time, and various other children’s activities.
  4. USG events – As an organization we help USG out with their events like the coffee houses and their USG dance. We try and involve them in our programs and give them opportunities to work with us.
