Children's Literature on the Web
Children's Literature: General and
Author Sites
This is a site created by the International
Board on Books for Young People, which is responsible for awarding the Hans
Christian Andersen Medal every two years to an author and illustrator for his
entire body of work. This is the only site I can find that lists the most
recent winners (1998).
The
Caldecott Medal is awarded annually to the outstanding illustration in
children's literature. The site offers a list of past award winners.
The
Newbery medal is awarded annually for the most distinguished contribution to
American literature for children.
Carol Hurst's Children's Literature site
Carol Otis Hurst is an educator, librarian,
storyteller, and language arts consultant who is an effective advocate for
integrating literature into the curriculum. Her site offers reviews of
children's books and ideas for lessons and activities surrounding them.
Though it is mostly an advertisement for Jan
Brett's books, fans of her characters and stories will enjoy the "Hedgie" activities link that offers teachers and
students art and coloring activities, and you can have her forward to you a
"teachers' pack".
Kay Vandergrift on Children's Literature
Kay
is a scholar of children's literature, so her site is academic in tone.
However, it's a wonderful source of critical information if you are interested
in learning more about the genre.
Anna Grossnickle Hines' Home Page
Anna
G. Hines has written some popular early childhood books. Her site offers
information about how she wrote her recent releases, pages of activities for
using her books in class, and discussion on choosing books for children.
This
is an engaging site with information on Suse MacDonald's
picture books, and a section on activities for educators.
Children's Literature: sites for
encouraging reading
A visually
appealing site designed through a joint academic project, this offers resources
for various age groups, research articles, software, and literacy discussion
groups.
Web site for the annual Scholastic Read For event,
which gathers classrooms around the country for an online reading celebration.
Children's Literature: Bilingual
Online
stories for children—each is presented in English and in Spanish
Children's Literature: Book Reviews
The online version of the classic publication from
the American Library Association.
The site contains the current two issues of Booklist, including the reviews.
An online journal that reviews books, videos,
software, music, audiobooks, and poetry for children. Wonderful!
The Scoop: Children's Book Reviews
Another
online journal book review source, this one also offers sales of out-of-print
copies and other features like an activity center.
Children's Literature: Guides to
Choosing Children's Books
Database of Award-Winning Children's Literature
This
searchable site allows you to construct a reading list of high-quality
children's books and stories based on your particular specifications and
criteria.
Brave Girls and Strong Women Bookstore
A
commercial site offering books meant to combat gender stereotypes.
A site for kids and parents to read reviews and
articles about books, new and old.
Sites,
links, online picture books, and recommended lists.
Reading Lists from RIF and ALA
A
site from the
Children's Literature: Reading-focused
websites for children
Games to enhance grammar and math skills. Kids love the site.
Children's Reading Room at the Museum of Unnatural Mystery
Stories
for children ages 3-9 focused on the characters that star in this web site.
Some of the story characters then have their own web sites to visit.
Delightful!
The
site offers pure fun--games and activities that support the Seuss books.
