Children’s Literature on the Web

 

Finding Children’s Literature in Ganser Library

In order to find books for children on a specified topic, follow these steps:

Ø      Go to the Millersville University Library Catalog

Ø      Click on the “Guided Search” Tab

Ø      Click on “Set More Limits” (bottom of screen)

Ø      From the Collection box, scroll and choose “Juvenile Literature—All”

Ø      Click Set Limits

Ø      In the first search box, type your topic, such as “animals”

Ø      In the second search box, type another search term if necessary, such as “poems” OR, if looking for an early childhood picture book, type “easy”.

Ø      Choose from your list of titles—call numbers will refer to the different sections of the juvenile collection, all on the 2nd floor.

IBBY

This is a site created by the International Board on Books for Young People, which is responsible for awarding the Hans Christian Andersen Medal every two years to an author and illustrator for his entire body of work. This is the only site I can find that lists the most recent winners (1998).

 The Caldecott Medal Home Page

            The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually to the outstanding illustration in children's literature. The site offers a list of past award winners.

The Newbery Medal Home Page

The Newbery medal is awarded annually for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Carol Hurst's Children's Literature site

Carol Otis Hurst is an educator, librarian, storyteller, and language arts consultant who is an effective advocate for integrating literature into the curriculum. Her site offers reviews of children's books and ideas for lessons and activities surrounding them.

 Jan Brett's Home Page

Though it is mostly an advertisement for Jan Brett's books, fans of her characters and stories will enjoy the "Hedgie" activities link that offers teachers and students art and coloring activities, and you can have her forward to you a "teachers' pack".

Kay Vandergrift on Children's Literature

            Kay is a scholar of children's literature, so her site is academic in tone. However, it's a wonderful source of critical information if you are interested in learning more about the genre.

 Anna Grossnickle Hines' Home Page

            Anna G. Hines has written some popular early childhood books. Her site offers information about how she wrote her recent releases, pages of activities for using her books in class, and discussion on choosing books for children.

Suse MacDonald's Web Site

            This is an engaging site with information on Suse MacDonald's picture books, and a section on activities for educators.

A visually appealing site designed through a joint academic project, this offers resources for various age groups, research articles, software, and literacy discussion groups.

Web site for the annual Scholastic Read For event, which gathers classrooms around the country for an online reading celebration.

Booklist Magazine

The online version of the classic publication from the American Library Association. The site contains the current two issues of Booklist, including the reviews.

 The Children's Bookwatch

An online journal that reviews books, videos, software, music, audiobooks, and poetry for children. Wonderful!

 The Scoop: Children's Book Reviews

Another online journal book review source, this one also offers sales of out-of-print copies and other features like an activity center.

 Children's Reading Room at the Museum of Unnatural Mystery

Stories for children ages 3-9 focused on the characters that star in this web site. Some of the story characters then have their own web sites to visit. Delightful!

 Seussville University
