Spring '06 #01 - first practice is Wed. Jan. 18th.
[Announcements]
Welcome back for the Spring'06 at MU.
Hope everyone had a happy holiday season. The Spring fencing schedule
looks to be starting off with lots and lots of competitions in the area.
We're hopefully going to be able to host an event for the Harrisburg
Division this semester. Everyone's help and support will be requested
to assure a smooth event and future hosting opportunities.
** Special Announcement **
Since we've managed to grow into a (reasonably) healthy organization so
quickly, we do need to spread out the administrative workload that goes
along with it. I'd like to hold a special election to fill some
vacancies in the officers' corps, so that Lucas doesn't have to run
himself ragged again this semester!
Nominees and candidates can email fencing@millersville.edu to toss their
hat into the ring (or glove onto the piste, in our case).
[Club Stuff]
(practice)
Hopefully everyone has been exercising over break, and is ready to do
some serious work this semester! I've been getting more requests to add
an extra practice day to the schedule. If a significant number of
members want to make this addition, we can create it. We will need to
talk to Dr. Nesbitt (in charge of Club Sports program) to reserve space.
(equipment)
Some of you may have purchased/planned on purchasing equipment over
break. Congrats, now don't break it! ;) I'm pleased to announce that
we have negotiated a deal with Absolute Fencing Gear, which will allow
the club to purchase items at a 20% discount from the listed prices
(some restrictions apply). If you would like to take advantage of this
discount, please email fencing@millersville.edu with your lists. I've
got some special paperwork to fill out in order to use the discount, and
it would be best to stack orders to save on shipping.
I'm also hopeful that we can increase the club inventory this semester.
As you know we are running tight on club gear, and several items are in
need of repair/replacement. I've been in communication with UMD fencing
club who may be able to supply us with some of their over-stock club
gear at low rates. Stay tuned for more info...
I've been thinking of doing some work (if possible) to the storage
locker in Pucillo to make the gear more accessible. I would like to
propose a new method of gearing up for practice, in order to speed
things up. I can get the locker open before 8pm, and I'd like for
everyone to report down there as they show up to grab a uniform. I can
haul up the bag of gloves and weapons, but moving that huge bag up and
down is just silly. I'm hoping we can get a way to hang up the jackets
after every practice to keep them from getting funky in the bag, this
will also help the longevity of the masks.
(fund raising)
Having lots of cool gear is great, but you gotta be able to pay the
bills! This spring is the time for fund-raising activities. Much of
our funding comes from club dues, with a portion also budgeted from the
University. We've been able to pay all our bills for Fall'05, but
Spring'06 will be lean unless we can raise some money! I have a few
ideas myself, but I'd like to have input from the membership about ways
of generating revenue (which can aid in generating members, which also generates revenue).
Early ideas include the old stand-by of selling 3-Musketeers candy bars.
Also, if/when we ever get a club logo finalized we can sell
t-shirts/patches with that logo and make a few dollars there. More
ideas are needed!!
Please note, that if/when we can host Division events, we would be able
to run some concessions (selling bottled water/gatorade/powerbars) and
pocket those funds.
