Sonnets From the Portuguese (1899)

This copy of Sonnets from the Portuguese exhibits a number of practices with regard to extra illustration / illumination: monochrome illumination of the book's cover (see example 1); the title page and its conjugate page employ coloring existing printed elements (the double dolphins colored and outlined in gold), highlighting existing printed letters as in the red title, and pasting in a portrait and signature of the author (see example 2); coloring head- and tail-pieces (see example 5); pasting in etching of scenes (see example 10); illuminating lead capital letters (see example 11); and, of course, introducing original art work as in example 21 (sometimes in tandem with pasted in etchings, e.g., example 17). The work is also signed by the illuminator at the end (see example 22).
