Center for Economic Ed Receives Gift to Support Stock Market GameThe Millersville University Center for Economic Education (MUCEE) will receive a $10,000 gift from Lift, Inc., of Lancaster to support the Stock Market Game (SMG), which the MUCEE oversees regionally. In partnership with ECONOMICSPennsylvania, Lift, Inc., will contribute $5,000 each year for the next two years as part of the Educational Improvement Tax Credit program. The SMG is a highly successful interactive and interdisciplinary educational program that stimulates learning about economics, finance, and the American economic system, according to Dr. Mike Gumpper, MUCEE director and an associate professor of economics at Millersville. “It consists of a 10-week simulation that allows participants to invest $100,000 in the stock market. An exciting, real-world, true-to-life simulation, the SMG enables participants to discover the risks and rewards involved in financial decision-making, the sources and uses of capital, and other related economic concepts.” Gumpper also explains that the SMG is the only market simulation that is endorsed by the National Council on Economic Education and is correlated to voluntary national standards in math, economics, and business education, as well as educational standards in a growing number of states, including Pennsylvania. Lift, Inc., is Central Pennsylvania's exclusive material handling dealer for Toyota, Crown, and TCM Forklift Trucks. It also represents JLG, UpRight, and Genie Scissor and Boom Lifts, Serco Dock Equipment, and LPM Parts. Founded in1973 as a material handling business servicing all brands of forklift trucks, the company today has over 75 service technicians. Gumpper says that the MUCEE’s mission is to ensure that every child understands essential economic concepts, is able to use economic ways of thinking and problem solving, and has a solid grasp of the nature and structure of the national and global economy, as producers, consumers, and citizens. To serve this mission, Gumpper notes, the MUCEE–established in 1995–provides area school districts with the latest resource materials, conducts teacher training workshops and seminars, provides technical support for curriculum development, and consults with teachers and schools regarding national and state economic standards.
